Once upon a time there lived a fox and a hare, The fox's house was made of ice and the hare's house was built of bark.
When the fine warm spring came the fox''s house melted away, but the hare's house stood there as soundly as it had all winter long.
The fox came and asked the hare to let her in for the night and when she got into the house she chased the poor hare out. The hare ran down the road crying and there he met a dog.
"Bow-wow-wow! What are you crying for, Brother Hare?"
"You'd cry, too, if you were in my place! I had a house made of bark and the fox had a house of ice. The fox asked me to let her in and then chased me out of my own house!"
"Don't cry, Brother Hare, I'll help you."
They went to the hare's house.
"Bow-wow-wow!" barked the dog. "Get out of there!"
But the fox was sitting high up on the warm stove and shouted down to them:
"If I jump down there I'll make your fur fly all over the field!" The dog took fright and ran away.
