So the hare went away again, crying louder than ever. This time he met a rooster carrying a scythe.
"Cock-a-doodle-do! What are you crying for, Brother Hare?"
"You'd cry, too, if you were in my place! I had a house made of bark and the fox had a house of ice. The fox asked me to let her in and then chased me out of my own house!"
"Come with me, I'll help you."
"No, you can't, Brother Rooster. The dog tried and couldn't chase her out. The bear tried and couldn't chase her out. The bull tried and couldn't chase her out. You won't be able to, either."
They went to the hare's house. The rooster beat the ground and flapped his wings to make a great noise.
"Cock-a-doodle-do, I'm coming after you. I'll cut off your head, I'll kill you stone dead! Foxbegone!"
The fox heard him and took fright. "I'm putting on my shoes...." And the rooster shouted again:
"Cock-a-doodle-do, I'm coming after you. I'll cut off your head, I'll kill you stone dead! Foxbegone!"
This time the fox answered: "I'm putting on my coat...."
